The Dance Competition Jacket

Within this podcast post I had decided to interview my sister, Sabrina, about an important piece of clothing that had a lot of meaning to her through out her life. The item she had decided to choose was her competition jacket, as she has been dancing for 13 years, dance has been a huge part of her life. Competitive studio jackets always hold so many memories because they are worn constantly at competitions so the jackets always carry the scent of hair spray and little flecks of glitter.

Concluding Thoughts

I feel as if it is important that many people have items that remind them of important events in their life because this adds a level of reflection and reminiscence of things you've done in your past or hope to achieve in the future. When my sister was younger she had always had a hard time with getting the steps to dances, especially when preparing for competition dances. The more she worked, the more dance became easier because she never gave up on trying to improve and always worked so hard on improving. When Sabrina wears her competitive jacket she thinks about how far she's come from this unsure tiny dancer, to someone with confidence who has grown to know what kind of dancer she is instead of the dancer she wants to be. Often times people fail to appreciate the importance of clothing and the affect it has on their day to day lives (Corner, 2020). Clothing is something that is powerful and tells a story of one's life overtime, I've quoted this before and I'll quote it again, clothing is "like a second skin" (Jenkins, 2020). I know now more then ever the importance of clothing because now that I'm done dance each costume or competitive jacket I own creates this yearning and nostalgia to remember what it was like to be on stage and the feeling of adrenaline that came with that (Jenkins, 2020). The amazing thing about clothing is that it has the ability to shape lives through its personal connections and is something that represents our personal choices in life (Corner, 2020).Whether it's a competitive jacket or someone's favourite hoodie, these items represent emotions and relationships with people and things around us. I'd like you to think about one thing that makes you feel nostalgic to something you love doing, it could be a sport or an experience in your past but think about a piece of clothing that makes you remember something about your past and reflect on where you are now and how far you have come.
